FUSE

What is Fuse? How does it work? What material id used for fuse wire?

The current taken by an electrical appliance from mains is limited by its resistance in the circuit. Under normal working condition  the circuit is within safe limit so the wire and switches do not become hot. if a fault develops there, it may cause the two conductors to come in direct contact with appliance. At that time the resistance will be of wires only which is every low (about 0.2 ohm). So a high current will flow through these wires are switches and these will overheat the conductors and it may set fire to the whole building causing serious damage. So some means are arranged to limit this current. generally, it is so connection when the current exceed the predetermined value. Such a Conductor is Know as Fuse wire.

Definitions: Fuse is a device which cuts off  the circuit when more then predetermined value current flows in a circuit.
it is the weakest point of the which breaks when more then normal current flows in the circuit.

Fuse Wire: The function of the fuse wire is to carry the normal working current safely without heating but when more then normal working current passes through it, it rapidly heats up to melting point.

Materials Used: the material which can be used in fuse are tin, lead, zinc, silver, antimony, copper, aluminium etc.
Copper or lead, tin alloy is mostly used in ordinary fuse wire.

Terms Used For Fuses

1. Fuse: as defined earlier, it is a device used for protecting the cable in a circuit against damage from an excessive current. fuse is a teem used in general to represent all prats of the device.

2. Fuse element or fuse wire: it is that part of the fuse which melts when an excessive current flows in the current and thus isolates the device from the supply mains.

Minimum fusing current element: it is that minimum vale of current  at which the fuse element melts.

Current Rating of Fusing element: it is the value of current which the fusing element can normally carry without melting. its value is less then the minimum fusing current.

Fusing Factor: the ratio of minimum of fusing current and the current eating of fusing element.
of fusing factor=
Minimum fusing current
----------------------------------------------
Current rating of fusing element
its value is always more of then 1.
